A short lesson in RSS feeds

There are about 25 blogs to read in 12 months of health, fitness and fun. In addition, I read about 75 other weight loss blogs, together with about 50 various blogs and pages related to social issues and technology. That's a lot of blogs, some who post hourly and some who post monthly. So how do I keep track without going back to my list of favourites/bookmarks?

RSS. Basically, it's a way of telling the reader that new material has been added to the page. Here's how I use it:

In Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 (Firefox and Opera have similar features but I am unfamiliar with them) I click on the star on the upper left of the browser

Where I am presented with a list of blogs that I subscribe to, those which are in bold have new material. So I just read the update of the blog by clicking on the bold name, that allows me to read the new material, or click through to the actual blog, or read the last 100 or so blog entries if I want.

This is very easy to use, I'll never go back to reading blogs the old way (using bookmarks).

So how do you subscribe to blogs like I do? Click on the orange icon to the right a few lines from the top of Internet explorers's window

That's it, really. After a while when you have lots of feeds, you can also categorise them so you can group them in similar topics

You can also check for specific news items on Google News, Google Blog search, and other places. For instance, you can see all new blog entries on say high carb diet by typing that phrase in quotes in Google blog search, then after performing the search clicking on the Feeds button.

Internet Explorer will now check every once in a while to see if feeds have changed, this period can be changed either by right clicking on the name of the blog in the above list, then click on Properties, or by changing the settings on Tools/Internet Options/Content/Feeds/Settings.

That's all you need to know, thanks to ScreenPrint 32 for help with the images.

John.
